Trace Race is a thrilling game released by Dragon Data Ltd. in 1983 for their Dragon 32 and Dragon 64 home computers. Developed by Microdeal, this game quickly gained popularity for its unique gameplay and challenging design. It is a single-player game that falls under the action and racing genre, providing an exciting experience for players of all ages.
The objective of Trace Race is to navigate a small car through a maze of roads while avoiding obstacles such as walls, traffic cones, and other vehicles. The player controls the car with a joystick, giving a real-life feeling to the gameplay. The graphics are simple yet effective, with vibrant colors and smooth movements. The sound effects, though basic, add an extra layer of excitement to the game.
One of the standout features of Trace Race is the level editor, allowing players to create their own custom tracks to race on. This feature added a whole new level of replayability, as players could challenge themselves and their friends with new and unique tracks. The game also included a high score table, encouraging friendly competition among players to see who could complete the level in the shortest time.
As players progress through the various levels, the difficulty increases, making the game more challenging and engaging. The tracks become more complex, with tighter turns and narrower roads, requiring precise control and quick reflexes from the player. This ensures that the game remains entertaining and engaging even after multiple playthroughs.
Trace Race received positive reviews from critics and players alike, with many praising its addictive gameplay and innovative features. The game was commended for its challenging difficulty and ability to keep players entertained for hours on end. It also won the Dragon User Magazine Best Game of the Year award in 1984, solidifying its place in gaming history.
Unfortunately, the Dragon 32 and 64 home computers did not have a long lifespan, and with the rise of more powerful gaming platforms, Trace Race faded into obscurity in the late 1980s. However, it remains a beloved game among those who owned a Dragon computer and is fondly remembered as one of the best games of its time.
