Uninvited is an adventure game from the DOS era released in 1988. Developed by ICOM Simulations, it runs on an MS-DOS platform, and it is the second game in the MacVenture series.
Players take control of a character who finds the protagonist’s younger brother or sister in a car wreck, and they must investigate a mysterious mansion to find and defeat the evil force living there responsible for the tragedy. The game is presented in a first-person perspective, and the task is to explore the mansion, collect items, and solve puzzles. Various items around the mansion give clues which help the player progress in the game. The inventory consists of various tools and objects that can be used by the protagonist as they interact with their environments.
Combat scenarios are also an integral part of the game. Through the use of items acquired in the mansion, players must fight off goblins and ghosts in an attempt to avoid getting killed. Uninvited also features an innovative sound system that even allowed the computer to substitute for a MIDI device for a richer audio experience. Players listen to various sound effects in order to give them clues about what is occurring and might happen next.
Uninvited also has strong horror elements and may be considered one of the forefathers of the survival horror genre. It was unique for its time of release by featuring things such as sound effects and a branching story with multiple endings. It was well-received by critics and reached the top of the Honor Roll in the January 1989 issue of Computer Gaming World.
Even after over three decades, Uninvited still remains a classic adventure game in the DOS universe. Its engaging story, combined with suspenseful horror elements, make for an overall immersive experience. The game was the perfect combination of horror and adventure, making it one of the greatest games of its time.
