Armchair Quarterback

Armchair Quarterback is a video game in the sports genre and published by Pseudonym Software originally released in 1983. It is currently playable on DOS.

Armchair Quarterback is a shareware, single-player, text-based American soccer game. There were two versions of the game: the first was monochrome and the second had a color option. Other than that, the two versions were virtually identical.

The second version begins by offering the player a choice of color or monochrome, and then offers to display the game instructions. After selecting two teams from the twenty-eight available (the full list is provided later), a virtual coin is flipped and the game begins with the player controlling both teams.

The playing area is effectively divided into five horizontal areas. Note: All game text is in all capital letters. The first half-dozen lines describe the play, so the player can expect to see comments like
THE PACKERS ARE THROWING. . . CAUGHT AT THE 15-YARD LINE. 6-YARD RETURN
FIRST DOWN FOR THE BEARS AT THE 21-YARD LINE.
Just above the center of the screen is the scoreboard showing which team has possession, which quarter of the game is being played, the play clock which changes with each play, each team's points, 'Down' - that is, whether it is first, second or third, and what yard line the ball is on.
Just below the center of the screen is a graphic representation of the field of play showing the position of the ball and which team has the ball.
Below the graphic are twenty different plays, such as Draw Play, Field Goal, Punt, etc. that the player selects to play the game. Throughout the game, the player is instructed to make selections via the cursor keys, in this game that means the 8, 4, 6 and 2 keys on the number pad and not the arrow keys as you might expect.

The teams are Bears, Bengals, Bills, Broncos, Browns, Bucanneers, Cardinals, Chargers, Chiefs, Colts, Cowboys, Dolphins, Eagles, Falcons, 49ers, Giants, Jets, Lions, Oilers, Packers, Patriots, Rams, Raiders, Redskins, Saints, Seahawks, Steelers and Vikings.
