Crypts of Egypt is a platform game that takes place in the secret depths of an Egyptian pyramid; the goal is to reach the exit. Dangers await the protagonist, such as spikes and fire pits that slowly sap limited health, monsters that also damage health, and mines that kill instantly. The protagonist has an unlimited supply of blue balls that he can throw to destroy monsters, but a destroyed monster regenerates elsewhere in the room. Bottles can be found that replenish health and grant score.
There are also levers that can be found; when switched, they have a variety of effects, such as temporarily disabling a trap, or opening a pit under the hero's feet.
