Description Detective

Atari 8-bit classic Detective graced our screens in 1983 with a thrilling, mysterious plot. It puts players in the role of an acclaimed detective, tasked with the job of solving a case of double murder. The game takes place in an on-screen detective office, with the player able to physically move their on-screen self around to uncover clues and find solutions to the case.

Detective had a lot of unique features for its time. Many of the game mechanics have become modern-day staples in many similar point & click adventures today. It featured an inventory system, where the players can pick up and store items in an open-ended format. Additionally, the game contained an extensive dialogue tree, enabling the player to question suspects and suspects during the investigation.

Gameplay consists mainly of exploration and interrogation. The game begins on the morning of a major party being hosted in the game's mansion. The player is assigned the task of finding out who killed the game's two main characters, and who stole the missing money, before the night is over. The player follows in the footsteps of the crime and keeps collecting evidence and clues that may lead to the killer. Each level the player progresses adds more and more evidence to the case.

The game has an immersive story, with new characters met at each turn. As the plot advances, the player learns of past events, relationships, and motivations hidden behind each character, helping them to slowly uncover the truth behind the case. It also has a two-part finale which wraps up the mystery and reveals the murderer.

Detective has become an incredibly popular Atari 8-bit game, receiving great acclaim over its ability to deliver a classic noir mystery in an enjoyable and intuitive way. Its unique mechanics, immersive story and overall gameplay have shown its lasting popularity and it continues to be enjoyed by many three decades on.
