Geneforge 4: Rebellion

Geneforge 4: Rebellion is a video game in the role-playing (rpg) genre developed by Spiderweb Software and published by Spiderweb Software originally released in 2007. It is currently playable on Windows.

This is the fourth installment in Spiderweb Software's Geneforge shareware series. Geneforge 4 is an isometric role-playing game with turn-based combat set in a dark and unorthodox environment that combines fantasy with unusual elements such as advanced genetic engineering.

The world is torn by a long-running civil war between an elite caste that formerly had a monopoly on the creation of artificial life, and a combined group of persecuted ordinary humans, genetically altered humans, and a variety of independent artificial creatures. Although the protagonist begins as a rebel selected for genetic mutation through secret and risky rebel techniques, he is not restricted to one side of the conflict.

The player may be accompanied by various NPCs who contribute to the plot and comment on situations, however, he is usually supplemented by beasts of his own creation that he can control. If his skills are sufficient, the player can choose from a selection of fifteen unique and thirty modified creatures, each of which can gain experience and advance on their own. Geneforge 4 features a vast world that can be freely explored, with a location system reminiscent of the first Baldur's Gate. There are a large number of non-obligatory and hidden locations.

One of the highlights of the game is its extensive dialogues with a wide variety of options, as well as detailed descriptions of locations and special encounters. The plot is often praised by fans for its non-linearity and lack of emphasis on black-and-white morals. There are a plethora of side quests, many of which are related to the protagonist's class, skills, affiliations, or behavior in other encounters. Mutually exclusive quests are frequent.
