Savage Warriors

Savage Warriors is a video game in the action genre developed by Atreid Concept SA and published by Mindscape Asia Pacific Pty Ltd. originally released in 1995. It is currently playable on DOS.

Another good idea marred by actual execution, Savage Warriors is a side-scrolling fighting game that has several good ideas, none of which improve the gameplay.

The premise of the game is simple: 10 fighters are taken from their eras and forced to fight each other. In addition to the 10 basic characters, the game includes 5 'secret' fighters that you can discover and control. First impressions are quite promising.

Savage Warriors features an interesting introductory sequence (which is missing from this CD-rip) and an innovative method of character animation (claymation-style modeling that looks almost three-dimensional). You can also interact with the scenery, e. g. hanging from overhead beams, swinging from vines, etc.

The problem starts as soon as you become familiar with the controls and fight in various fights. The AI is downright awful: I'm not an arcade expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I was able to easily defeat several computer-controlled fighters in a row. While you can interact with the background graphics, you curiously can't attack while doing so--what's the point of swinging from vines if you can't attack or defend against them? To make matters worse, there's no way to reconfigure the keyboard controls, so if you're not used to the keys, you're stuck. The plasticine-inspired animations are fun to watch the first time, but after a while you realize they're much blockier than Virtua Fighter's polygonal characters.

Although it has several innovative ideas, Savage Warriors simply lacks addictive gameplay to stand a chance against the best fighting games.
