Silpheed is a video game in the action genre developed by Game Arts Co., Ltd. and published by Game Arts Co., Ltd. originally released in 1993. It is currently playable on SEGA CD.
SEGA CD’s Silpheed places the player in command of the advanced Silpheed fighter during humanity’s desperate defense against the Xacalite invasion. Enemy forces have launched a massive assault against Earth, deploying fleets of fighters, bombers, cruisers, and heavily armed warships. Across a series of combat missions, the Silpheed must break through orbital defenses, protect vital installations, and strike at the enemy’s most powerful vessels. Briefing sequences establish each operation and provide the setting for the next stage of the campaign.
The game is a vertically scrolling shoot-em-up in which the Silpheed advances continuously through hostile territory. Enemy formations enter from every direction, often arriving in waves or attacking from behind while larger craft occupy the center of the screen. Accurate movement is essential, as the fighter must weave between incoming shots, avoid collisions, and remain in position to exploit openings in an enemy formation. Ground targets, space platforms, launch bays, asteroids, and enormous capital ships add variety to the battlefield. Each stage culminates in a demanding encounter with a major opponent whose attack patterns require careful observation and rapid reactions.
A distinctive feature of Silpheed is its weapon-selection system. Before missions, the player can equip the fighter with different offensive and defensive devices, choosing a combination suited to the expected opposition. Standard fire provides dependable, continuous attacks, while specialized weapons offer wider coverage, concentrated power, homing ability, or protection against particular threats. Ammunition and weapon availability influence these choices, making the selection screen an important part of the campaign rather than a simple equipment menu. Successful play depends on preserving the most useful weapons and changing tactics as the enemy introduces new formations and machines.
The action is presented against polygonal backgrounds that create a convincing sensation of movement through space. Although the Silpheed and most combat units are represented by detailed sprites, the rotating and expanding scenery gives the battlefield a three-dimensional appearance. Star fields, planetary surfaces, metallic installations, and distant structures scroll beneath the fighter while explosions fill the screen with flashes of color. Large enemy craft are built from numerous animated sections, emphasizing their scale as they move into view and break apart under sustained fire.
CD-quality music provides a dramatic electronic score for the missions, with urgent themes supporting the constant pace of combat. Explosions, weapon discharges, impacts, and warning sounds give each encounter a sharp, mechanical presence, while spoken sequences and cinematic presentation strengthen the military atmosphere. The result is a demanding arcade-style campaign that rewards memorization, precise control, and thoughtful armament choices. Silpheed combines relentless shooting with strategic preparation, presenting a polished space battle in which every mission pushes the player farther into the Xacalite offensive.
