Super Drinker is a remarkable MSX game released in 1983. Developed by Konami, it's a frenetic, top-down, maze-like game with dynamic physics. At its core, it's a simple concept, where the objective is to move an object from point A to point B. Regardless, that simple idea is wrapped in a challenging, yet enjoyable packaging.
In Super Drinker, the player is placed in the shoes of an aspiring beer-headed superhero, denoted by an energized beer can, who's tasked with quenching their thirst in the short amount of time given. The player must navigate ever-changing landscape of bricks and blocks, while evading malicious "bouncers" and other active obstacles. The catch? With each second that passes, the hero’s patience wearing thin, and the beer can starts to move faster and faster. It's up to the player to use their agility and reflexes to prevent running into walls, which will cause them to drop their valued beverage on the ground. If the hero successfully replenishes their energy, the game continues.
The visual aesthetic employed in Super Drinker is worth mentioning. The vibrant, blocky graphics accompanied by a catchy electronic music score, brings the whole game to life, sucking in players who aren't immediately captivated by the gameplay alone. Further, it starts off relatively easy, with the tile based floor and mild obstacles. As the game progresses, the level design becomes increasingly more intricate, and the obstacles more and more difficult to avoid.
Just like most earlier MSX game, Super Drinker had its share of bugs and where often quite difficult to beat.
