The Hermit's Secret

The Hermit's Secret is a video game in the adventure genre developed by Temple Software, Inc. and published by Temple Software, Inc. originally released in 1982. It is currently playable on DOS.

The Phantom's Revenge, Hermit's Secret and Castle Elsinore are three of Temple Software's early IF pieces that have very little value except for their age.

Hermit's Secretis very similar to Colossal Cave: your goal in the game is to uncover as many treasures (belonging to the mysterious hermit of the title) as possible. To do this, you must wander around, find the treasures and place them in the right place. Plagued by below-average writing, inane puzzles and an inflexible parser that understands only the most basic verb-substantive sentences, Hermit's Secret would deserve absolute anonymity were it not for some logic puzzles that do require a modicum of thought. It's also very unforgiving: once you find all the treasures, you only have a few moves to get back to the town hall to deposit them.

Don't expect this game to be more than what it is: an Infocom wannabe that falls far short of the mark.
