Ultranium is a 1999-released Windows game, giving players an exhilarating and dynamic gaming experience. Developed by Ricochet, the title is presented in a classic brick-breaking format, where the gamer shoots projectiles towards colorful and varied patterns. This cult classic has sparked many a joyful moment for the legions of diehard fans of the game, and is even lauded by casual gamers.
The rules of the game are fairly simple. Players must guide the paddle at the bottom of the game screen using the arrow keys, and hit the ball with the paddle, deflecting it against a pattern of colored tiles at the top of the screen. The more tiles the ball collides with, the more points the player will receive. Destroying the entire pattern will move the player onto the next level.
There are various power-ups included in the game, each bringing its own unique element that can make the game more enjoyable. Aside from the usual enhancements that affect the speed and agility of the ball, there are also treasures and whimsical faeries that will randomly drop for the user to collect, along with special bonus points.
Replayability is key with Ultranium, as its incredibly generous score limits open up multiple opportunities for the user to acquire a high-score on each level. Additionally, players can play up to two players in the game, which helps bring out the cooperative and competitive sides of a game.
The visuals on display in Ultranium are uncomplicated and direct, as it applies a blended mixture of 3D and 2D graphics. Although the graphics have aged considerably since its release, the simple design only heightens the gameplay. Sound is light and fun-filled with silly 8-bit tunes that add a layer of joy to the overall experience.
For gamers looking to take to the virtual high seas, Ultranium is the perfect fit. Quick, intuitive, enjoyable and totally addictive gameplay make it an ideal game to play with family and friends for a highly entertaining afternoon of retro video game bliss.
